Just tell them “Yeah if there’s any openings I’ll let you know”. I don’t like putting my name/rep on the line like that unless I know for a fact that this person is as good or better as an employee than me.

Well this person already knew about the opening, and asked if they could name drop me. I said no.

The worst is when it’s someone through LinkedIn that you haven’t talked to in years and know is still a lousy P.O.S. That’s when I queston my LinkedIn decisions.

Oh god, I hate getting asked this by people I wouldn’t recommend. My trick is usually, “You know, the hiring manager for this role is a bit pissed at me at the moment so I’m afraid my endorsement may have the opposite effect you’re hoping for.”

I do something similar, just saying something to the effect that my name isn’t going to have any pull around the office really. haha

I did that once and the guy had a phone screener with HR 3 days later. He passed muster with them (because who with a pulse doesn’t?) He mentioned that he knew me but also knew the hiring manager “wasn’t a fan of mine” Next thing I know I get a visit from the hiring manager who was all, “Dude are we ok?” When I realized where that came from I started laughing and told her “Long story short, DO NOT hire that person.” She thought my dodge was brilliant and started using the same method.

Lol nice.

Also, what kind of asshat says that to HR after you mentioned it to them?! That seems like a perfect way not to get hired, whether it’s a lie or the truth.

I’ve had to do that a couple of times, the one guy told me I wasn’t a real friend. I mean if he thinks the whole point of friends is to advance his career them I’m glad he doesn't like me anymore. I don’t need friends like that.

That’s really good. I just kind of tell them everyone has to apply online, and I’ll let HR know to look for their resume if it makes it through the applicant screening software. It almost never does, so the problem just goes away.

There are a very small number of people that I’d do that for. One guy I got hired has been there for over 20 years, so I guess I did ok

I feel that I’ll have this issue more as I get older... But, to an added degree, as I will be the HR manager.
